During week 3 work continued in area A inside chamber 4 and on the
outside of the city gates both in the southeast and northeast areas.
Dirt and rocks were carefully taken out of chamber floor in 2 loci.
The work will continue to find the earliest foundations of the city.
The
base of the southeast outer wall was uncovered. The wall is
"stepped" at the bottom, leading Dr. Arav to conclude it may have been a
sitting area for the town elders to welcome visitors (see the picture
below). Excavating continued on the area just to the west of the
wall, taking out much dirt with little finds.
Large
amounts of dirt and rocks were taken out of the area southeast of the
city gate where the Roman tower had collapsed. The continuation of
the cobblestone pavement was discovered and lying on top was the handle
from a quite large iron age vessel. See Craig Congdon from Topeka,
Kansas carefully taking it out of the earth for the "find of the week"
