After a week's break between the
3rd & 4th week of the season, week 4 was a continuation of excavating
outside the city gate to get a good view of the courtyard leading up to
the 10th century city gate. Good progress was made while
uncovering a mud brick floor that was eventually taken out to expose the
layers underneath. Carl
Savage arrived & started digging with a small team behind the city gate
south of the Roman
temple. Walls & floors were uncovered as well as very
nice destruction layers. A quite nice piece of Megarian ware (see at
bottom left) from the
Hellenistic - Roman period was found by Elie Haupt & Howard Aaronson.
The volunteers, in a silly mood, named it "Herod's tongue".
