CALL FOR PAPERS
The 6th Annual Batchelder Conference
for Biblical Archaeology
28-30 October 2004
TOPIC: JESUS IN ARCHAEOLGY
Excavations and archaeological research in the Land of Israel together with new approaches to historical sources and the Scriptures have revolutionized our perceptions on the first century in a way we have never seen before.
The excavations at Jerusalem, Capernaum, Sepphoris, Yodfat,Gamla, Caesarea Maritima, Caesarea Philippi, Nazareth, Bethsaida and many others carried out in the last few decades, created a totally new and fresh view of the country as it looked like in antiquity. Speculations on the past are gradually giving way to much more solid reconstructions based on physical evidence rather than on mere set of hypothetical presumptions. Reading ancient sources is recently more often interpreted against the wealth of archaeological background. The results are very frequently surprising and breaking new grounds.
We invite scholars to present papers which will deal with these issues. And ultimately should attempt to answer one of the most intriguing question: How does Jesus appear against the background of the recent archaeological researches.
Presentations should be prepared for 40 minutes presentation and 10 minutes for questions and answers. There will be 10 minutes break between each presenter.
Please address the abstracts to: Dr. Rami Arav, ASH 220H, UNO, Dodge St. Omaha, NE 68182, Fax: 402 554 3681, or to my e-mail address: rarav@mail.unomaha.edu
Deadline for abstracts: August 25th 2004.
