GABRIELA EARL
Listen to Gabriela, a UNO student from Brazil, discuss her experience in Omaha.
Program staff will greet you at the airport and escort you to university housing.
Upon arrival, program staff will give you orientations to the campus and community. At orientation, you will learn about important immigration regulations, SEVIS requirements, class schedules, using UNO’s online resources, navigating campus, health services, culture shock, and many other important topics.
Placement exams will help our training team determine the appropriate level of English courses for the beginning of your program at UNO. The assessments will be held on the first day of training.
International participants are required to have health insurance. You will be covered by insurance selected by IIE. Details on this policy will be posted here soon.
We advise that you bring immunization and medical records from your home doctor. These records will be helpful in case of a medical emergency or if you opt to receive the Measles, Mumps, and Rubeola (MMR) immunization on campus. This immunization is not required for short-term UNO participants.
UNO requires all international students and scholars to do the PPD (Mantoux) tuberculosis skin test upon arrival. PPD tests will be given in UNO Health Services on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. You must return two days after you take the PPD skin test to complete the process.
For more information on healthcare services, see UNO Health Services.
Your course schedule will run daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. You will also have several intercultural activities in the evenings and weekend opportunities to see more of Omaha and experience U.S. culture first-hand. Check out the Draft Week 1 Schedule, which includes orientation and assessment activities.
Also check out the draft Program Schedule and Daily Agenda. Note that these schedules are subject to change.
After you arrive on campus, you will get a MavCard, which can be used for checking out items at the library, purchasing food or copy services, and receiving discounts at merchants that cater to UNO students and scholars. The Brazilian teachers will register for MavCards as a group. You will need to show your passport or other photo identification to get a MavCard.
Your eight-digit NU ID number and password will enable you to access many online services at UNO and log in to mavlink.
UNO's campus has many computer labs that you can use during the day or in the evening. Computers in the Criss Library and the Milo Bail Student Center will help you keep in touch with colleagues and friends at home during your stay.
The first morning of your stay, you will be escorted to the International Studies & Programs Office in Arts & Sciences Hall 241. This is an important SEVIS requirement. Please bring your immigration documents so that we can photocopy them. This includes your DS-2019, passport, visa, and Form I-94. We will also need your apartment number in University Village.
