Classes & Levels

ILUNO offers six levels of English classes: two at the Beginning Level, two at the Intermediate Level, and two Advanced Level classes. Students customize class selection based on their individual goals, which may include TOEFL preparation, university language training, discussing world events, or learning informal modern English.

THE WORLD MEETS HERE

Each year, more than 1,600 international students from more than 120 countries come to UNO. Begining Level

1210 Grammar: Learn the essentials of English grammar in a series of simple steps and practice with pictures.

1220 Foundations of Communication: Learn how to pronounce all of the consonant and vowel sounds.

1310 Grammar: The focus of this class is on grammar in context. Learn grammar through reading. Class activities include grammar exercises, short writing assignments, and speaking practice.

1340 Communication: Review the pronunciation of all the consonant and vowel sounds. Practice using vowels and consonants to sound out words.

Intermediate Level

1410 Grammar A: Practice the form, meaning and use of simple present and present progressive; habitual and simple past and past progressive; pronouns; modifiers; and time clauses.

1410 Grammar B: Practice the form, meaning and use of present perfect, present perfect progressive, past perfect, modals, gerunds, infinitives, articles, and passive voice.

1420 Reading: Learn to understand vocabulary through context and example. Learn to better understand what you read by finding main ideas and details and making inferences.

1510 Grammar: Learn and practice key grammar structures.

1520 Reading: Expand your reading vocabulary through context and example. Find main ideas, details, and inferences. Make outlines and write summaries.

1525 Listening: Practice dictation and group work, as well as note-taking skills.

Advanced Level

1612 Advanced Writing and Grammar: Write five-paragraph essays incorporating the Writing Process and writing traits. Study the correct use of grammar in writing to enhance and strengthen your writing skills.

1615 Advanced Listening and Speaking: Practice note-taking skills in class and interviewing skills outside of class.

1624 Applied Reading and Writing: Focus on reading from a variety of resources such as newspapers, college textbooks, fiction, magazines, charts, poetry, and lyrics. Practice and apply reading skills to all writing assignments.

1641 Advanced Pronunciation: Practice stress, intonation, and linking patterns to improve your pronunciation.

1645 Real World Communication: Practice dialogues, learn useful new vocabulary and idioms, create your own conversations, and participate in small group discussions.

1650 TOEFL: Study techniques for success on the paper based and internet based TOEFL (IbT).

1660 Public Speaking: Review and correct pronunciation difficulties, learn and use different speaking methods for oral presentations and group participation, and increase confidence in English oral communication in all situations. Prepare and present three formal 8- to 10-minute speeches that will be videotaped for evaluation. Deliver one demonstrative, one informative, and one persuasive speech. In these speeches, learn to work with visual aids and PowerPoint. Make weekly impromptu speeches in order to gain experience in speaking in front of people. Prerequisite: 1525 or 2115 or Placement.

1712 Research Writing: Learn the steps to doing research - compiling a bibliography, paraphrasing, and correctly acknowledging your sources.

1724 Advanced Reading: Read a contemporary American novel and increase your reading vocabulary and comprehension skills.

2020 Reading Strategies: Improve your reading comprehension for personal, professional, or academic purposes.

2115 Introduction to Writing: Learn how to write clear, concise, and logical paragraphs using a variety of techniques.

3470 Survival Vocabulary & Conversation: Learn the 500 words most often used in the English language. Acquire field-related vocabulary so you can talk, read, and write about family, friends, your home, school activities, and shopping.

6710 Grammar Topics: Select the areas of grammar you want to review and perfect. The class will be customized to your specific needs.

6732 Everyday Slang: Study and practice popular slang expressions.

6737 Vocabulary for Academic Purposes: Maximize your vocabulary potential, not only for the TOEFL test, but also for personal life and university studies.

6751 Paper TOEFL: Review and practice TOEFL Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, Reading Comprehension, and Test of Written English.

6753 University Orientation: Learn the strategies you need to be successful in an American college or university.

6756 Current Events: Learn what is happening in the world, then read about the issues.

6771 Accelerated Phonics: Review consonant and vowel sounds.
