Concentrations & Options

In order to better prepare our students for entering the workforce, all students majoring in International Studies must choose at least one concentration. All concentrations require the completion of at least 15 hours of upper division coursework, and students selecting the International Management & Business option must also complete basic accounting and economics courses. It may be possible to work out additional areas of concentration, depending on the availability of relevant coursework.

Ambassador Kislyak

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS

UNO has a history of attracting high-profile international visitors to campus, where special lectures and other events give INST majors and all UNO students opportunities to learn about global issues directly from decision makers. International Management & Business Leadership

This concentration, with its international career track, is recommended for individuals who are interested in careers in government, international private organizations and foundations, and international business and commerce. Students choosing this concentration may take courses from the areas of international finance, international marketing, and international rconomics, as well as related courses in political science, geography, history, and other fields. Students choosing to specialize in International Management & Business Leadership must add the following to their core courses: Accounting 2010, 2020, and Economics 2200. They also must complete at least 15 hours of upper-division business courses.

Global Strategic Studies

This concentration is designed for individuals interested in careers in government and international security, and in teaching in secondary and higher education. The Intelligence Consortium (IC) Scholars Concentration is within this concentration.

International Nonprofit Management & Leadership

The International Nonprofit Management & Leadership option is recommended for individuals interested in careers with international nonprofit organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or private voluntary organizations (PVOs). Students may obtain American Humanics (AH) certification through a cooperative arrangement with the AH program.

Global IT Leadership & Management

The education and training of globally savvy professionals in science, engineering, and information technology (IT) is important for the long-term viability of many U.S. firms today. Students concentrating in Global IT will be required to add CIST 1400 and CIST 3100 to the general INST core classes and complete the following 18 hours of coursework: ISQA 3310, ISQA 3420, ISQA 4380, ISQA 4910, and CIST 3200/INST 3000 (Study-Abroad Experience). The study abroad course will be implemented as a project course taken overseas or through other agreed-upon experiences. For those students who are unable to study abroad, this course can be replaced by taking ISQA 4130. In addition, there is a required capstone course, ISQA 4950.

Area Studies

This specialization offers the opportunity to focus on one or more areas of regional interest. Examples are Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia, Western Europe, East Asia, and Third World Development. It may be possible to work out other areas of concentration, depending on the availability of relevant courses at a given time. Individuals opting for an Area Studies concentration must complete at least 15 hours of upper-division courses on the region they select. At least one foreign language studied by those selecting this specialization must be associated with the area chosen.
