Why International Studies?
Globalization. Perhaps no other trend in the past 20 to 30 years of human history has impacted our economy, our culture, and our daily lives more than the rapidly developing connections between countries and cultures. Growth in international trade and the digital revolution have intertwined the lives of diverse nations like never before. Some of the world's most persistant challenges - environmental degredation, violent conflicts, dwindling natural resources, labor market disruptions - can only be solved by cooperating with international partners.
In this environment, employers of all kinds - public and private, business and nonprofit - need workers who can navigate diverse cultures and speak more than one language. International Studies majors are well positioned to succeed and to make a positive difference in this era of globalization.
It sounds like international course offerings can be found in many colleges, departments, and disciplines. How do I know if a course will count toward the requirements of my INST degree?
Yes, there are a broad range of courses that INST majors can use toward the degree. Review the Requirements, check out the Concentrations & Options, and if you don't see a course listed, stop by Arts & Sciences Hall 238 or e-mail Vickie Stone, vicstone@unomaha.edu, to make an advising appointment.
Can I get INST credit for an internship that I have already arranged?
Possibly. Internships for credit must have clearly defined learning goals, must be monitored by your INST advisor, and must end with an evaluation from the on-site supervisor at the internship. Be sure to Meet Your Advisor before assuming that an internship will result in credits toward your degree program.
Sigma Iota Rho (SIR): The honors society for International Studies. Qualifying students can join SIR to socialize with like-minded students, participate in activities with international students on UNO's campus, and help organize events like UNO's Model United Nations for high school students.
